MUSCLE PROTECTION

An impaired interaction between skeletal muscle and nerves due to trauma or degenerative diseases has a deep impact on mobility and overall quality of life in the affected patients. Nanotechnological antioxidants have proven to support skeletal muscle functions in critical conditions (such as those associated to spaceflight) by mitigating both muscle- and neurodegenerative processes.

The Regenerative Devices Laboratory aims at expanding understanding of the interaction of skeletal muscle and nanotechnology antioxidants, and at elaborating multidisciplinary strategies of obtainment of 3D, scaffold-based muscle constructs for regenerative purposes and for the wireless stimulation of muscle contractility in traumatic and degenerative disease patients.

This research is conducted in close collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Center for Materials Interfaces, Smart Bio-Interfaces), and with the University of Bari (XMatteR Laboratory).
